PHOTO ESSAY | Corroboree Billabong

Corroboree Billabong is a large wetlands system and part of the Mary River region in the Northern Territory. It’s environment is similar to a lot of other Top End wetlands: gorgeous crystal blue waters fringed by paperbarks and pandanus, filled with barramundi and the legendary saltwater crocodile.

Corroboree is larger than a lot of the other wetlands and billabongs in the region, and every trip out there leaves me exploring a different perspective of this magical place. Each trip I “discover” something different – on this visit I saw both Jabirus and White Bellied Sea Eagles in their nests, with young!

Where is Corroboree Billabong?

Corroboree Billabong is around 105km from Darwin (approx a one hour drive), reached via the Arnhem Highway (the road out to Jabiru/Kakadu National Park). From the Arnhem Highway (if heading from Darwin), you will turn left to make the final journey to the Corroboree Billabong access point and boat ramp. The last part of the journey is an unsealed, gravel road but is well maintained and suitable for 2WD vehicles.

You’ll need a boat to explore Corroboree – this website gives some great information on the options available: http://corroboreebillabong.com.au/

If you would like a guided cruise of Corroboree, Wetland Cruises provide a great experience. I recommend the sunset cruise – the golden light cast over the water and foliage makes for some gorgeous photos!

The one that really took my fancy was the white bellied S Eagle at her nest —incredible shot . .The very last image with late afternoon light is also really great –This does not belittle one little bit ALL THE IMAGES –as I initionally said —OUTSANDING COLLECTION
